Gujarat’s record in education dismal: Sibal

Bangalore: Joining issue with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on his claim that the Bharatiya Janata Party would develop Karnataka on the Gujarat model, the Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said Gujarat had a dismal record in higher and primary education.
Speaking to presspersons at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office here, the Minister said that enterprising people of the State had established a record number of medical and engineering colleges and it had 2.85 per cent more educational institutions for every one lakh population.
Whereas, it was 1.94 per cent for every one lakh population in Maharashtra, 1.40 per cent in Punjab, 1.30 per cent in Tamil Nadu and 1.20 per cent in Gujarat and Kerala.
During the regime of S.M. Krishna, he said Karnataka achieved a significant increase in tax and non-tax revenues.
It rose from Rs. 11,230.44 crore in 1998-99 to Rs. 21,731.84 crore in 2003-04.
