THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to extend the term of the Law Reforms Commission, headed by former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer, by six months. The Commission had sought more time to complete its work, which involves review of existing legislation and proposing new legislation including those for unification of laws applicable to different areas of the State. The Cabinet also decided to entrust the selection of candidates for posts in the Class I, II, III and IV services reserved for disabled persons to the Public Service Commission. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who briefed the media on the Cabinet decisions, said the decision would have retrospective effect for vacancies that had arisen since 2004. Currently, 3 per cent of the total vacancies were reserved for the disabled. The Chief Minister said the second anniversary of the Left Democratic Front government, falling on May 18, would be celebrated in an elaborate manner. Ministers would lead inauguration of completed projects and launching of new projects in each district. Ministers in charge of the districts are: M.A. Baby and M. Vijayakumar — Thiruvananthapuram, P.K. Gurudasan and C. Divakaran — Kollam, Mathew T. Thomas and Mullakkara Ratnakaran — Pathanamthitta, G. Sudhakaran and T.M. Thomas Isaac — Alappuzha, Mons Joseph – Kottayam, N.K. Premachandran – Idukki, S. Sarma — Ernakulam, K.P. Rajendran – Thrissur, A.K. Balan – Palakkad, Paloli Mohammed Kutty – Malappuram, Elamaram Karim – Kozhikode, Benoy Viswom – Wayanad, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan – Kannur and P.K. Sreemathy – Kasaragod. Asked whether the government would hold a general inquiry about godmen who engage in nefarious activities, the Chief Minister said the situation would not change without mediapersons and policemen changing their attitudes towards godmen who engage in illegal activities.
