Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition Leader Oommen Chandy has sought Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s intervention to avert the token stir called by government doctors on Thursday. In a letter to the Chief Minister, the Leader of the Opposition pointed out that the State government had failed to take meaningful steps to find a solution to the doctors’ non-cooperation stir that had been on since March. He said the UDF government had taken a favourable approach to the doctors’ demands to sort out pay commission anomalies. However, it could not sort out the matter since the High Court and the Election Commission did not allow amendments to the pay commission’s recommendations and directed that they be implemented in toto. Therefore, he wanted the government to settle this anomaly. However, it was for the government to decide on the other two demands of the doctors regarding speciality administrative cadre and higher pay scales as per the Vishwas Mehta Committee report. Word of cautionHe pointed out that it would inadvisable for the government to turn a blind eye to the discontent among government doctors, who would be the fulcrum of health care service delivery in the backdrop of reports that the viral fever could rear its head in the northern districts this year.
