Drop move to implement Electricity Act

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Kerala Electricity Workers Federation (AITUC) has urged the Union government to drop its move to implement the Electricity Act 2003 in the State.

The Centre should review the Act and amend it by allowing State governments to continue with the existing State electricity boards. A.N. Rajan, working president, said here on Wednesday that the State government should also take steps not to disband the board.

He said that the move to do away with the State electricity boards was part of the Union government’s move to open up the power sector to private investors.

“The Left Democratic Front government should not permit the privatisation of the sector when it is in power,” Mr. Rajan said.

He said that several agitations were on in the country against the unbundling of the State electricity boards.

Active protests had taken place in States like Bihar, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chattisgarh demanding extension of the deadline for splitting the board, he said.

The federation would join hands with the other trade unions and employees in its fight against privatisation of the power sector.

It alleged that the Electricity Act 2003 had created several problems including a hike in electricity charges and frequent power cuts.
