Attack on party workers allegedly by CPI (M) activists during panchayat polls

KOLKATA: State leaders of the Revolutionary Socialist Party condemned the attack on party supporters allegedly by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists in Basanti area of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal during Wednesday’s panchayat polls.

The Public Works Department Minister, Kshiti Goswami, without mentioning any party said “fascist forces” were responsible for the violence on his party workers and “were out to control power by whatever means”.

His party colleague and State’s Minister for Jails, Biswanath Chowdhury, described the incidents as “death of democracy”.

Biman Bose, Chairman of the Left Front Committee, said in Siliguri that it was the responsibility of the Left Front constituents to work towards strengthening Left unity in the State.

Focus on left unity

Attempts to ease the animosities among Left parties who are at odds with each other in certain places will have to continue, he said.

“The panchayat elections are not the end of history or politics”, Mr Bose remarked. The Left Front existed before the elections, exists now and will do so after the polls, he added.

In a statement, Mr Bose, who is also the Secretary of the State Committee of the CPI (M), said the incident [at Basanti] was “indeed unfortunate”.
