Agriculture awareness campaigns, a hit

P. Sudhakar

Farmers in Tirunelveli are able to directly interact with officials

Know the schemes: An agriculture awareness campaign under way at Pottal near Palayamkottai.

TIRUNELVELI: The agriculture awareness campaigns being organised by the Department of Agriculture in villages, where farming is the predominant profession, have started evoking tremendous response since the peasants can speak to the officials concerned directly and convey them their requirements such as seeds, fertilizers and farm equipment.

After the recent restructuring that brought all farm-related departments under the Department of Agriculture, block - level village awareness campaigns are being conducted in coordination with sister units like Departments of Horticulture, Seed Certification, Agriculture Marketing and Agricultural Engineering to create awareness among the farming community regarding the development schemes being implemented by various wings of the department.

Since indents for inputs required for the next season have arrived at grass-root level itself based on the response from agriculturists, these campaigns are very successful.

Hence, an action programme has been formulated for about 100 village-level awareness campaigns - at least 5 programmes per block covering all the 19 blocks in the district in 21 days. Accordingly, campaigns are being conducted from April 22 onwards.

One of the campaigns was recently conducted at Thirumalaikozhunthupuram village in Palayamkottai block, a potential ‘seed village’ of this region where nearly 230 acres were covered under paddy and 50 acres under pulses during 2007 – 08.

The campaign benefited nearly 330 farmers. Since response was so good at Thirumalaikozhunthupuram, officials conducted similar meetings at Thiruvannanathapuram Pottal and Muththoor villages.

Farmers of Thirumalaikozhunthupuram, Thiruvannanathapuram Pottal and Muththoor villages, who attended these campaigns, unanimously indented for paddy seeds for the ‘advance kar’ season as the recent unseasonal rains destroyed the ‘pisanam’ paddy on several hundreds of hectares and transplanting machine for their paddy seedlings to be cultivated under System of Rice Intensification technique, all from agriculture department.

Fruit seedlings and vegetale seeds

Moreover, they also wanted to have a considerable quantity of fruit seedlings and vegetable seeds to be planted in their kitchen gardens from the horticulture department and one power tiller for their ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) group members from the agricultural engineering department.

Responding to queries of farmers, M. Vellapandi, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Palayamkottai and S. Raja Mohamed, Horticultural Officer, Palayamkottai block, explained the need for conducting such campaigns at village levels and ascertain the farmers’ requirement for their next cultivation.

ATMA group presidents B. Sankarapandian, A. Puduraja, Perumal and V. Pushpam spoke in the campaigns.
