Two farm schools to come up in Tuticorin

R. Vimal Kumar

Tuticorin: The Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), a society of various stakeholders of agriculture in the district, will establish two farm schools in the district this financial year under a Central Government sponsored scheme to enhance the yield of paddy.

Speaking to The Hindu, C. Gandhirajan, Project Director of ATMA and Joint Director of Agriculture, said that the farm schools would come up at Ottapidaram and Thenthiruperai blocks.

“A total of 500 farmers from 50 villages spread equally over the two blocks will derive the benefits of the concept,” he added.

The schools would adopt ‘learning by doing’ process to propagate System of Rice Intensification (SRI) techniques as a methodology to augment productivity and increase the profit of farmers.

Mr. Gandhirajan said that under the scheme, a demonstration plot on a maximum area of 2.5 acre each would be set up at the two blocks to explain to the farmers the nuances of field preparation and seed treatment.

Besides, the farm schools would describe Integrated Pest and Nutrient Management techniques to them.

“We will also distribute Integrated Pest Management kits free to a representative each of the 50 villages covered,” the Project Director said.

Farmer representatives of 50 villages, who attend the training sessions at the farm school, would be taken out on an exposure visit to progressive fields where SRI techniques were successfully implemented.
