History-sheeters hurl bombs at police, held
Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI: Police have arrested two brothers, allegedly involved in several criminal cases, for attempting to murder the members of a police team.
The incident happened when the police team tried to stop the van, in which the brothers were travelling, during a routine vehicle check here.
Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, P. Kannappan, said that a speeding van was intercepted by the team at Thenkalam near here in the early hours of Wednesday after a hot chase. As the police tried to nab the two occupants, they hurled country bombs at the law-enforcers.
Though one of the four country bombs exploded, no one was injured and the police managed to detain the duo.
During interrogation, the police came to know that the culprits were N. Shanmugapandian (40), vice-president of Valliyoor Town Panchayat, and his younger brother N. Muthukrishnan (38) of Valliyoor, who are wanted in connection with more than 15 criminal cases.
“While Shanmugapandian had been cited as an accused in five murder cases, including the murder of a police constable Paul Arumaidurai in front of Valliyoor police station, four attempt to murder cases apart from criminal intimidation, forcible grabbing of property, etc. in the past 15 years, his brother, who is also a history-sheeter, has been cited as accused in several criminal offences,” Mr. Kannappan said.
