BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has stayed a notification issued by the Education Department asking five schools in Tumkur district to close down as they had been derecognised. The schools had petitioned the High Court after the department issued notices to them, saying that they could not continue to operate or run the schools as recognition had been withdrawn. The authorities, the schools claimed, had alleged that they had violated the State norm on medium of instruction and were teaching in English-medium. They said they had not been given an opportunity to avail of the benefit of the interim order passed by the High Court some time ago. The High Court, they said, had permitted schools which had violated the medium of instruction to continue, provided they filed an affidavit agreeing to abide by the State policy on the medium of instruction. The schools challenged the notices of derecognition, saying that hundreds of students would be affected if the notices were given effect. They urged the court to stay the notices. Justice Jawad Rahim, in an interim order, stayed the operation of the notices. He also ordered issue of notices to the State and other respondents and adjourned further hearing on the case.
