Corrections and Clarifications

  • With reference to an article “The tale of a broken pot” (“Newscape” page, May 13, 2008) Iravatham Mahadevan, one of the co-authors of the article, clarifies that he had wrongly mentioned, in the first paragraph, that the broken pot was found in Andipatti in Theni district of Tamil Nadu. It was found in Andipatti in Vellore district. It was in Andipatti (Vellore), some years ago, that a coin with a Tamil-Brahmi inscription of the Third Century A.D. was found.

  • In a tennis report “Tsonga survives a scare” (“Sport”, May 13, 2008), on the first round of the Hamburg Masters Series, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Nicolas Mahut 0-6, 7-6, 6-2 and not 0-6, 7-6, 6-3 as said in the text of the report. The results had the correct scoreline.

  • The ninth paragraph in a report “Daunting task ahead of Royal Challengers” (“Sport”, May 12, 2008) was “Any slip up will push the team beyond recovery. So far, a bunch of players with proven abilities in Test cricket has done Bangalore any good.” It should have been “… has hardly done Bangalore any good.”

  • A report “Indian girls finish eighth” (“Sport”, May 11, 2008), on the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup girls under-16 tennis tournament in Bangkok, suggested that India had finished eighth after losing to Japan. The results column indicated that India had lost to Thailand. The loss against Japan had come a day earlier. It was Thailand that beat India to seventh place. Japan finished sixth.
