National camp in full swing

BANGALORE: The National swimming camp for the Commonwealth Youth Games, scheduled to be held in India later this year, is in progress at the SAI (South) Centre Pool in Kengeri near here.

The chief National coach, S. Pradeep Kumar, said that the preliminary phase of the camp, which has 52 swimmers, would be pruned at a later stage.

“This is basically a long term camp, with adequate breaks for the swimmers. We plan to have trials by August and pick a core group, which would later form the basis for final selection of the team,” said the coach.

The campers are working on physical conditioning as they have been out of practice during this off-season period. “We will move on to stroke techniques, speed work and other areas after some time,” said Pradeep Kumar.

The third place of the last Commonwealth Youth Games would be the selection criteria for the meet. “Since the Games are being held at home, we plan to have more Indian swimmers and we wish to get the norms down to either to the fourth and fifth place,” said Pradeep Kumar.

Few more swimmers, who were busy with examinations, are expected to join the camp shortly. — Special Correspondent
