MIDFIELD TUSSLE: Belgium’s Jerome Truyens and Pakistan’s Muhammad Jeved in action.

IPOH: Argentina on Wednesday exacted sweet revenge over New Zealand to register its fourth win, booking a place in the final of the Sultan Azlan Shah hockey tournament.

Argentina tops the seven-nation standings with 13 points from five matches after its 2-1 win, with another match in hand against Canada on Saturday.

Argentina went on the offensive from the very start.

Forward Martin Juan Lopez gave Argentina the lead in the ninth minute, breaking through the Kiwis’ defence by beating two players before pushing the ball into goal.

Eight minutes later, Argentina increased the lead off a penalty stroke.

Argentina’s Ignacio Juan Gilardi was brought down in the D and umpire Peter Alan Wright of South Africa awarded a penalty stroke which Gilardi easily flicked it to the right, giving no chance to goalkeeper Paul Woolford.

New Zealand, however, managed to pull one back through Benjamin Collier in the 27th minute from the top of the D.

Three-time champion Pakistan was defeated 3-5 by Belgium in a thrilling match.

With the defeat, Pakistan has 10 points from five matches.

The results:

Argentina 2 (Martin Juan Lopez 9, Ignacio Juan Gilardi 17) bt New Zealand 1 (Benjamin Coolier 27).

Belgium 5 (Thomas Briels 2, John-john Dohmen 18, Charles Vandeweghe 24, Jerome Dekeyser 37, Loic Vandeweghe 69) bt Pakistan 3 (Shakeel 4, Rehan Butt 23, Muhammad Ateeq 35).

Malaysia 2 (Chua Huat 9, Mohammad Rahim 31) drew with Canada 2 (Sulhwinder 24, Scott Tupper 62).
