CHENNAI: Eight South Asians are among this year’s proud winners of the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development awards in the United States. The programme, CAREER, is described by the NSF thus: “A Foundation-wide activity that offers the NSF’s most prestigious awards in support of the early career development activities of those teacher-scholars who most effectively integrate research and education within the context of the mission of their organisation. Such activities. build a firm foundation for a lifetime of integrated contributions to research and education.” The South Asians are: Hamsa Balakrishnan, Assistant Professor of Aeronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Ali R. Bhat, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; Avik Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Engineering, University of Virginia; Narayanan Neithalath, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, Clarkson University; Nigamanth Sridhar, Assistant Professor of Software Engineering, Cleveland State University; Raghuveer Parthasarathy, physicist, University of Oregon; Sivaguru Jayaraman, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, North Dakota State University; and Krishna Madhavan, Assistant Professor of Engineering, Clemson University. The grants, in most cases, are linked to the proposals, bringing with them assistance ranging from $ 400,000 to $ 575,000 in these cases.
