71 caught in pre-dawn police swoop

Some criminals have cases against them outside State too

TIRUCHI: In a major pre-dawn swoop against offenders involved in property crimes, special police teams caught 71 persons in different places in the district on Wednesday.

Some of the criminals apprehended were allegedly involved in robberies and dacoities even beyond the jurisdiction of Tamil Nadu.

Conducted on the instruction of Central Zone Inspector General of Police Karan Singha, the raid was led by Tiruchi Rural Superintendent of Police A. Kaliyamurthy, Perambalur SP Prem Anand Sinha and Pudukottai SP P. Moorthy involving around 300 police personnel. It was carried out under the supervision of Tiruchi Range Deputy Inspector General of Police Ashok Kumar Das.

The raiding parties were split into different teams each headed by a deputy superintendent of police, two inspectors, 20 constables attached with Law & Order wing and 10 constables of Armed Reserve. The four-hour long operation commenced at around 1 a.m. concluded before the crack of dawn. The teams fanned out in various places including Ramji Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Kakkan Colony, all situated in the outskirts of the city, besides Lalgudi, Tiruverambur, Navalpet, Samayapuram and Musiri, Mannachanallur, Kallakudi, Samayapuram and Thottiyam. Among the held were also those who had been absconding with crime cases registered against them not only in Tamil Nadu but also beyond the State. Fingerprints and photographs of all those who were held were taken.
