AFC keen on matches in city

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The old story of L.B Stadium hosting a political meeting and then wearing an unpleasant look came to the fore again. Ironically, it came just a day after Alberto Colaco, General Secretary of All India Football Federation (AIFF), had inspected the stadium along with other grounds to identify venues for the AFC Confederation Challenge Cup championship featuring eight top teams of Asia.

Mr. Colaco’s visit was limited to meeting the SAAP’s top boss in connection with the event to be held from July 30 to Aug.14. That the sport is in the doldrums is clear by the fact that the State team is not fielding a team in the prestigious Santosh Trophy Senior nationals scheduled in J & K.

While AFC is keen on hosting matches at the GMC Balayogi Stadium in Gachibowli and three other Army grounds which had hosted the recent Military World Games matches, AIFF wants to hold matches in L.B. Stadium to attract the crowds.
