R.K. Roy’s ‘Mission Saromayo’ aims to find stray dogs a home as ‘they are as good as pedigree ones’ Hyderabad: Man’s best friend might not have the power to speak, but four-year-old Chingu, a stray dog that was adopted by R.K. Roy understands Bengali. Chingu lives among ten other stray dogs with Mr. Roy who started ‘Mission Saromayo’, a rehabilitation programme for street dogs. “Esho Chingu (come Chingu)!,” calls out Mr. Roy, a well-built, beige coloured dog with a brown belt around its neck trots into the room wagging his tail in elation. “He understands Bengali and the remaining 10 dogs do too”, laughs Mr. Roy, a retired chartered engineer. It was only four years ago, a small pup was found at Mr. Roy’s gate. After a lot of medication and care, the pup recovered and found a new home at Mr. Roy’s residence at Gandinagar in Marredpally. “I named it Chingu instantly. Most of the stray dogs that were tortured in Gandinagar slum, jumped the wall, into my residence while trying to run away from people,” says Mr. Roy. At present, 11 dogs stay at Roy’s residence under the Mission Saromayo. “The programme aims to find stray dogs a home because they are as good as pedigree dogs,”informs Roy. “We have chalked out a plan right from collection of street dogs to keeping them in low cost model shelters. A rehabilitation processing centre will also be setup shortly for sterilising and immunising puppies so that people can adopt them,” he adds.
