Explore the city’s old areas

BANGALORE: The third BCP (Bangalore City Project) Urban Space Event inviting the public to explore the city is taking place on Sunday.

Kotey, Pate, Kere, Thota: Changing Geographies and Fragile Futures takes those interested into the Old City area to have a feel of the history and culture of Bangalore. The earlier BCP Urban Space events covered Gavipuram and Whitefield.

Four components mark this Urban Space Event — pete (commercial area), kote (fort), kere (tank), and thota (grove). It will be conducted by T.R. Champaka, urban planner; Suresh Jayaram, a visual artist and art historian, and Chandrashekhar Balachandran, cultural geographer.

Beginning with the Dharmaraya temple in Thigalarapete, the landscape of a community that played a key role in the botanising of Bangalore, the walk proceeds to the bustling, chaotic, colourful, complex space of K.R. Market.

With a visit along the way to an interesting shrine, the walk then leads to the remnants of the old fort before ending up at Tipu Sultan’s palace. After a lively dialogue, participants can sample some quintessentially Bangalorean food.

The Bangalore City Project comprises a group of concerned citizens and organisations from different fields, including art, culture, urban planning, geography, and architecture.
