Had received threat calls after engagement

NEW DELHI: A woman who allegedly masterminded an acid attack on her former driver at Dabri last month for severing relations with her has been arrested along with two men by the Delhi police.

On April 22, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital received a patient with acid burns on his face because of which he lost vision in his right eye. The patient, who identified himself as 29-year-old Deepak, revealed that a man who had hired his taxi had thrown acid at him near DDA Park in Mahavir Enclave. The matter was immediately reported to the police, who registered a case of attempt to murder.

Enquiries revealed that Deepak earlier worked as a driver for Jaya, a resident of Dwarka, whose husband is a non-resident Indian settled in the US. Jaya allegedly struck a close relationship with Deepak. However, Deepak quit the job last year and started his own taxi service.

Last November, Deepak got engaged to a woman named Bhawna. A few days later, he was beaten up by some unknown assailants who threatened him with dire consequences if he married Bhawna. However, Deepak decided to go ahead with the marriage and tied the knot in December last. Within days, he started getting threat calls asking him to forsake his wife.

On the fateful day, an unknown person hired Deepak’s taxi and asked him to pick him up from near a DDA Park. When Deepak reached the rendezvous point, acid was thrown on him. Investigations led the police to zero in on an alleged criminal named Rajuwho purportedly confessed to having committed the crime for Rs.10,000, paid to him by Badruddin at the behest of Jaya.
