TAMBARAM: Lassie, a seven-year-old female Labrador Retriever, attached to the Kennel of Railway Protection Force in Tambaram, has bagged a gold medal at the All India Police Duty Meet held in Mumbai in March.

The achievement by this ‘Canine Detective’ this year is one better, as it won a silver medal at the meet held in Chennai last year. Enrolled in RPF as a pup in 2002, Lassie is an expert in tracing explosive substances. Trained rigorously over the past six years, Lassie has an amazing sense of smell and was duly rewarded at the national meet.

RPF officials said Lassie competed in the Explosives Detection event in which she secured the Gold Medal. She was accompanied by her handler, Assistant Sub-Inspector A.R.R.Ravi. She was judged for the manner in which she was able to trace explosive substances concealed in a closed atmosphere, underground and in a remote location.

Points were given to each category and based on the cumulative aggregate, Lassie was given the Gold Medal. The recognition was prestigious, considering that Sniffer Dogs from various police units from across the country competed in the Mumbai meet.

It is a strict and a disciplined schedule for Lassie, who gets up at 6 a.m. After roll call, training and grooming sessions it is time for breakfast.

She is joined by her colleagues at the Kennel — Blackie, a six-year-old male Labrador Retriever and an expert in search and rescue operations and Lexus, a two-year female Doberman who specialises in crime detection. The three Canines have their own respective handlers.

Breakfast includes half-a-litre of milk, 200 grams of bread slices and an egg. After some rest and training by their respective handlers, the Canines are served lunch that comprised 500 grams of beef, 200 grams of boiled rice and boiled vegetables.

Sniffer Dogs are an integral part of vigilance and investigation by RPF and the Canines have raised up to the occasion every time, senior officials added.
