Work on subway meets with resistance from residents
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: The State Highways Department on Tuesday resumed work on the subway to replace a level crossing near the Meenambakkam railway station. But it was met with resistance from a section of residents belonging to St. Thomas Mount cum Pallavaram Cantonment Board.
The Highways Department started constructing the Rs.9.31-crore subway to replace the level crossing (LC No. 19) in 2002. As the Defence Ministry did not hand over about 11,000 sq. mts required for the subway, the project was delayed.
Meanwhile, Southern Railway completed its portion of the work. And earlier this year, the Defence Ministry gave its “enter upon” permission to the State government, following which fresh tenders were called for. An earth moving equipment was deployed to clear dense vegetation.
Residents living near the subway under construction protested. A team of AIADMK partymen canvassing for elections to the council of the Cantonment Board joined them.
K.G. Singaram, a former councillor from the party of Pallavaram Municipality, mobilised his partymen and residents, who gathered around the earth moving equipment for more than an hour. Only after an assurance from officials, did the crowd disperse.
