Pudukottai fishermen plan agitation on May 19
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: Fishermen of coastal villages in the district will stage a demonstration on May 19 in front of the Police station in Manamelkudi, about 75 km. from here, in support of their 10-point charter of demands.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of representatives of various fishermen’s associations of different hamlets in the coastal parts of the district, convened at South Kudiyiruppu near Kottaipattinam, about 80 km from here recently.
The demands, among other things, included disbursement of special off-season allowance per family of Rs.1,000 and 50 kg of rice during the ban currently on for 45 days till the end of this month.
The meeting also adopted a resolution urging the State Government to include all the fishermen labourers as members of the Fishermen Society.
Big fishermen owning mechanised boats alone were being enrolled as members presently, enjoying the benefits of the Society.
The resolution said that all the fishermen workers to whom the State Fisheries Department had issued identity cards should be enrolled as members of the Society, without any discrimination.
The district accounted for about 1,200 fishermen labourers residing in 22 major villages.
