TIRUCHI: The role of cooperative banks and the Farmers Clubs in the overall development of the rural society was stressed by speakers at a farmer’s seminar organised jointly by the Lalgudi Rural Bank, IFFCO and the Tiruchi District Cooperative Union at Lalgudi recently. The Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Rama Jayam Pandian, in his presidential address said cooperative banks played a keyrole in the development of rural areas. He commended the Lalgudi Rural Bank for doing a yeoman service in addressing the needs of the farming society of the area, in association with the Lalgudi Farmers’ Club. The services rendered by the Farmers’ Club has been acknowledged by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) which has selected it as the best Farmers’ Club in the state, he added. The Special Officer of the Tiruchi District Central Cooperative Bank, R. Brinda, said that cooperative banks should not stop with the distribution of loans. They should take active participation in the activities in the execution of projects and programmes for the development of the rural areas. Ms. Brinda said the NABARD launched the farmers clubs way back in 1983 to create an awareness among the villagers of the various activities of the banks and cooperative bodies. The farmers clubs since then have come a long way and at present over 1,500 clubs exist in the State. The Regional Manager of IFFCO, P. Krishnan, conducted a quiz programme for the members of the farmers clubs and Ms. Brinda gave away prizes to the winners. The Joint Director of Agriculture, N. Ponnusamy, the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Lalgudi, S. Mayandi, the General Manager of the Tiruchi District Central Cooperative Bank, T. Veera Vinodhan, and others spoke. Mr. Rama Jayam Pandian presented a shield to the president of the Lalgudi Farmers Club, C. Mutamilselvan, in recognition of the club’s achievement. Over 400 farmers participated in the seminar.
