Karunanidhi cites reasons for not celebrating birthday

Special Correspondent

“I am pained by the betrayal of friends”

“Sethu project is facing uncertainty”

“Terrorism has put a question mark over the future of the country”

CHENNAI: Uncertainty over the Sethusamudram project, the horrors of terrorism, unfaithful friends and absence of companions, who will even be ready to lay down their lives for the country, are the reasons for his decision to give up the 85th birthday celebrations, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday.

In a statement here, he said the Sethusamudram project was supported by leaders such as Periyar, Anna and Kamaraj. “It is likely to boost the trade and bring prosperity to Tamil Nadu. But the project, unanimously supported by all political parties, is facing uncertainty,” he regretted.

Mr. Karunanidhi said terrorism put a question mark over the future of the country, apparently referring to the serial blasts in Jaipur.

The Chief Minister was also pained by the betrayal of friends. “When we try to do something for the welfare of the nation by forming an alliance, we get only the friendship of those who betray,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said he was also longing for the company of those who would come forward to lay down their lives for the nation.

He wondered what was the point in celebrating a birthday till he got the opportunity to proudly talk about the greatness of his companions. “Just to express my anguish and longing, I have decided not to celebrate my birthday.”
