ENCOURAGEMENT: Sports Minister M.Vijayakumar presenting memento to a student who participated in a sports training camp organised by the Corporation in the capital on Thursday. Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Sports M.Vijayakumar said here on Thursday that the government was working on a long-term decentralised project to identify and nurture sports talent in children from Kerala with the aim of producing Olympic medals for the country. He was delivering the inaugural address at a function organised to felicitate the students who participated in a special sports training camp organised by the City Corporation. Mr. Vijayakumar said the project named Operation Olympia would offer sports training facilities for children selected by local self-government institutions and from district-level competitions. He said the facilities at the high altitude training centre in Munnar would be utilised for the project. The Minister added that moves were on to establish sports councils at the panchayat level. “Our aim is to make Kerala the sports capital,” he said. Of the 225 students from government aided schools in the city who attended the training camp, 160, including 35 from the coastal wards, were selected for further training. Presiding over the function, Mayor C .Jayan Babu said the Corporation was planning to organise more such sports camps for children. V.Sivankutty MLA, Kerala Sports Council secretary Dr.Kishore and UDF leader Johnson Joseph were among those who spoke.
