“Status quo on property tax”

Staff Reporter

‘Rebates and concessions for tax payers would also continue for the current financial year’

‘The online system can be used only if no rebates are sought’

NEW DELHI: Amid allegations that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi had raised the rates of property tax, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta on Thursday said the civic body “would maintain status quo on property tax rates that were prevalent during 2007-08 for the year starting April 1, 2008”.

Mr. Gupta said the rebates and concessions for property tax payers would also continue for the current financial year while the age of senior citizens for availing themselves of the 30 per cent rebate would remain 60 years.

“A rebate of 30 per cent on tax due on the covered space of a building up to 200 square metres area will be allowed in the case of any self-occupied residential building owned by senior citizens, women, physically challenged persons and ex-Servicemen. This rebate is available for one residential building within the jurisdiction of Delhi,” he added.

Mayor Arti Mehra said properties belonging to ex-Servicemen up to a maximum of 100 sq. m. of covered space would be exempted from tax if they were self-occupied for residential use and no portion was let out for any purpose. Exemption would also be accorded if the person owned more than one property in Delhi, in which case exemption would be available only on the property permanently used for residing.

Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya said exemption on residential property under self-use in rural villages would be allowed to the extent of 200 sq. m.

“Those taxpayers willing to avail themselves of the rebates and concessions should file their property tax returns manually at the property tax office of the respective zone. The online system can be used only if no rebates are sought,” he added.

Rebate

The property tax for the financial year 2008-09 is due from April 1, 2008. Fifteen per cent rebate is being offered on lump sum payment of property tax, an additional 20 per cent for co-operative group housing societies, and another 40 per cent rebate for Government-aided schools. These rebates are also applicable on the online system of paying property tax.
