Proceedings against Kushboo stayed

J. Venkatesan

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed a Madras High Court judgment directing the Chief Metropolitan magistrate, Egmore, to conduct a joint trial of the 23 defamation complaints filed in various places in Tamil Nadu against actor Kushboo for her alleged remarks on pre-marital sex.

A Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice M.K. Sharma stayed the April 30 judgment that ordered consolidation of all the complaints for a joint trial and to dispose them of in six months. After hearing Ms. Kushboo’s counsel for Pinky Anand, the Bench granted the stay and posted the matter for further hearing on July 7. Ms. Kushboo was present in the court.

The petitioner said India Today, a magazine, conducted a nationwide survey in September 2005 on pre-marital sex. She had expressed her views on the need for teaching sexology to the younger generation, either in educational institutions or by their parents.
