Kudumbasree has a role to play: Isaac

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac has called upon Kudumbasree members in Kerala to be part of the mission to ensure food security in the State.

Addressing a public meeting here on Thursday in connection with the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Kudumbasree movement, Dr. Isaac said women bore a major part of the brunt of the absence of food security in the State. Kudumbasree, an initiative formed with the objective of empowering women, could play a major role in helping these women, he said.

One suggestion he made was for each and every Kudumbasree member to take up vegetable cultivation in their households, not just for sale, but to ensure that their homes had adequate supplies of vegetables throughout the year.

“The crop can be anything, cucumber, brinjal or ladies’ fingers. But something should be cultivated. Fix a day in June for all of you to start cultivation on the same day. The Community Development Societies (CDS) of Kudumbasree should start making preparations including procurement of seeds from now itself. Further, squads should be formed to train the women in cultivation and taking care of the crops. The squads should also monitor the progress and submit weekly reports.”
