Media coverage

The media coverage of the Jaipur blasts left a lot to be desired. They concluded that the motive of the terrorists was to create religious tensions and anarchy in the State. Newspersons on some television channels asked leading questions almost persuading the interviewees to say the blasts targeted a particular community. What the media and speakers appearing on various news channels failed to highlight was that the areas in which the blasts took place have a substantial population of those belonging to the minority community too.

Terrorism aims at spreading fear among the people. The targets are large gatherings and include people from all communities. The objective of the perpetrators is to create fear. A sensitive and responsible media should work towards allaying panic. They should enhance people’s ability to identify terrorist acts as crimes against humanity as a whole.

Shobhana Boyle,
