NEW DELHI: Infosys Technologies Director Nandan Nilekani on Thursday visited the Northern Region Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC) along with the Minister of State for Power, Jairam Ramesh, in order to get a first-hand knowledge of the generation, transmission and distribution system in the region. Mr. Nilekani has been asked by the Power Ministry to prepare a fresh report on how information technology (IT) could be used to give a new direction and impetus to the power sector, including areas such as billing, metering and enhancement of consumer facilities across the country. InteractionMr. Nilekani heads the Task Force on the matter that is expected to submit its report by September this year. After a prolonged interaction with the NRLDC officials on the management of the grid system of the region, Mr. Nilekani was given a power point presentation by Power Grid Corporation of India on its transmission lines, the proposed investments and how it had used IT to develop an efficient and effective transmission network. Mr. Nilekani was also apprised about the adoption of IT by Power Grid in day-to-day management of its transmission lines and grid management and its focus to move ahead with fresh impetus in this sector. Mr. Nilekani will also undertake a review of the working of the Southern and Western Region grids in order to get a first-hand knowledge of their working and what possible solutions could be provided by IT to tune them with changing times and technologies.
