CHANDIGARH: Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S. F. Rodrigues on Thursday launched the new Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the Chandigarh Police at a function in the Sector 11 police station. Set up by the Chandigarh Police with the participation of NASSCOM and Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, the new cell will help in checking computer-related crimes such as unauthorised access to a computer, online banking fraud, “phishing”, sale of illegal articles like wildlife products, drugs and so on, pornography, online gambling, e-mail spoofing and cyber stalking. Gen. Rodrigues emphasized the need for strengthening the linkages of this cell with the national data base centres and NASSCOM and effective coordination with other states to check computer-related crimes. He said public cooperation in providing facts and relevant information could help the police in anticipating problems than merely reacting. The citizens should also inform the police about any wrongdoing by anti-social elements engaged in computer-related crimes, he added. Inspector-General of Police S. K. Jain said that the cell is equipped with one portable forensic lab machine for capturing data from suspect hard disk of computers.
