PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Thursday said that the government would take immediate steps to avail itself of funds sanctioned by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) for the Union Territory to carry out various infrastructure development works. Responding to Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Harjit S. Anand’s remark at a meeting with him here that the Union Territory had not availed itself of the HUDCO loan of around Rs. 543 crore for infrastructure development under the tsunami rehabilitation programme, Mr. Rangasamy said the delay was due to “certain administrative reasons.” “Officials reluctant to clear files”
According to official sources, the Chief Minister had apprised Mr. Anand of the difficulties posed by “reluctance” on the part of some top bureaucrats in the Union Territory administration “to clear the relevant files” to obtain the loan despite the Union Ministry of Home Affairs giving its approval. Mr. Anand called on the Chief Minister to discuss ways to expedite schemes launched by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation for State governments. He had informed the Chief Minister that since the Union Territory administration did not draw the amount, they would have to revalidate the loan, the sources said.
