Clean chit for measles vaccine

Laboratory submits report

“Human error may have resulted in the death of 4 children”

“The vaccine is completely safe for use”

New Delhi: A government laboratory here has given a clean chit to the measles vaccine administered to children in Tamil Nadu and said that human error at the local level could have possibly resulted in the death of four children last month.

Samples of the vaccine were sent to the Central Drugs Laboratory at Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh following the death of the children who developed complications after receiving the vaccine.

The laboratory report submitted to the Union Health Ministry said the vaccine was completely safe for use, a senior Ministry official told PTI.

The official said the report would be forwarded to the Department of Family Welfare, which would take further action, including issuing directives to the State government.

The Centre had ordered to stop using the vaccine supplied by a Hyderabad-based company across the country. An order of 90 lakh units of vaccine had been placed with the company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board, of which it had supplied 45 lakh units. — PTI
