To fight knife crime

LONDON: Metropolitan Police plan to use airport-style scanners and hand-held weapon detectors in the fight against knife crimes in London.

The police say officers would use the scanners in parts of the British capital that have been the hardest hit by the use of knives as deadly weapons. Teenagers and others suspected of carrying weapons will be searched .

The use of knives in attacks has soared this year with more than 100 stabbings reported here. There are indications the problem is getting more severe as the weather improves. — AP
