The healthy way to self-employment

Valuable tips: SHG members being briefed on preservation of fruits and vegetables at the workshop in Puducherry on Friday.

PUDUCHERRY: A five-day training programme on vegetable and fruit preservation was organised here with a view to enhancing the employability of women self-help groups.

The Food and Nutrition Board of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, in coordination with the Oulgaret Mahila Consumer Group, trained 40 women in food and vegetable preservation, with emphasis on nutrition.

“This training programme for SHGs is meant to help in self-employment and to start small-scale industries. We are also imparting training on nutrition deficiencies such as anaemia,” Demonstration Officer of the Board A. Thirunavkarassu said.

The women were trained in preparing jam, jelly, different kinds of squash, synthetic syrups, cool drinks, pickles and chutneys. “These products can be preserved for 6 months to one year. After training, the women can make these preparations at home. We want to motivate them to prepare these products from their kitchen garden,” he said.

The training workshop started on May 13 and would end on Saturday.

“After this workshop, the women are planning to open a stall on May 21 and display the preparations they learnt here,” Oulgaret Mahila Consumer Group president K. Thilakavathy Velu said.
