Polling peaceful in Uttara Kannada

District registers 60 per cent turnout


SIRSI: Uttara Kannada district registered 60 per cent polling on Friday, according news reaching here from Karwar.

Polling in the district was by and large peaceful.

People of Sasiguli village in Bhatkal taluk boycotted the elections in protest against the apathy of the peoples’ representatives to provide basic amenities in the village.

Sanjay Bandekar, former Minister of Goa and kin of the Congress candidate for Karwar Anand Asnotikar, and his seven followers were detained by the police for allegedly violating the model code of conduct. However, they were released on bail later.

There were also reports of electronic voting machines developing snags.

However, they were set right by the officials concerned. Some voters complained that their names were missing from the electoral list.
