PUDUKOTTAI: Mushroom cultivation has become a lucrative activity for the women members of the self-help groups in the district, courtesy the growing demand for the produce in the recent past.

A number of women SHGs have been making the best of the limited infrastructure facility available to produce the maximum quantum of mushroom.

The demand for mushroom is felt at star-hotels in cities including Madurai and major towns such as Pudukottai and Aranthangi, say a cross-section of women members of the Self-Help Groups.

The fall in yield in the wake of summer has further stepped up the demand.

Assured daily supply

“Mushroom dishes have become a favourite among the masses. Apart from leading restaurants in towns in the district, even small scale snacks bars have been making a pertinent plea for an assured daily supply,” says R. Brahadambal, Animator of the ‘Mullai Arumbu Women SHG’ formed in Kalyanapuram in Kothakottai village panchayat near Tiruvarankulam.

She is happy that the trade fetches attractive returns since the inception of the SHG a couple of years ago. “In the initial period, we procured the seeds from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University; but, we produce it on our own to earn more profit and also to ensure immediate supply. However, the demand for mushroom has been on the increase,” she adds.

Maximum yield 20kg per day

The group now harvests at least 15 kg a day and the maximum yield would be 20 kg.

The monthly profit runs to about Rs.10,000.

She has plans to expand the shed to cater to the growing demand for the produce.
