PUDUKOTTAI: Thick growth of vegetation on the ‘rajagopuram’ of Sri Naganatheswarar Temple at Peraiyur village near here has been weakening its structure for the past several years. Periodical pruning of branches by the temple authorities, however, have proved to be only an interim measure to check the growth of the trees as the roots have been getting deep into the structure. A large number of devotees, in fulfilment of vow to get released from the ‘Nagadosham,’ offer their worship at this temple. Every devotee installs an idol of a snake in fulfilment of the vow. Idols of snakes adorn the walls of the temple all around as also the parapet walls of the temple tank (sunai) in front of the sanctum sanctorum.

Legend has it that the popular Tamil saint-poet Tirumular attained ‘siddhi’ here. The ‘Navagraha’ sannidhi is also in a different manner, with all the eight planets facing the sun, testifying to the fact that Sun God offered worship here. According to the Executive Officer of the Pudukottai Temples, P. Kadarkarai, it was last consecrated in 1989. Apart from the ‘rajagopuram’ the entire temple needed renovation for which steps were being taken. In fact, a meeting with the local villagers was convened recently to chalk out the renovation programme. The temple-car had been renovated recently, he added.
