GOBICHETTIPALAYAM: K. N. Sujatha’s is a joint family of sorts.

The 35-year-old lives with her sons, daughters and grandchildren.

In all, there are about 80 members in the family that lives in her house, Rakshanaa, which she bought and renovated at Rs. 13 lakh for the purpose.

To her, the family means everything. “I see God in my children. And, that is why I have given Gods’ names to them,” she says about her cats and dogs. She has a little over 50 cats, which are first love, and 27 dogs.

To be with her family, Ms. Sujatha had to fight with her parents. They would not let my children and grandchildren stay with me. They were annoyed to the extent of asking me to find a separate house to live in, and that is how Rakshanaa came into being, she explains.

That was because her children troubled her parents to no end, she recalls. They occupied the entire house; did not let us have non-vegetarian food and to do so, we had to lock them up; and, most of all, encroached upon our beds. It had been so in Ms. Sujatha’s parents’ house for long.

“My first child arrived when I was just eight, in Standard III. From then on, every couple of months, a new member arrived, she recalls. At one point, she had more than 100 children in her 5.5-cent house.

At Rakshanaa, however, things are different, as only she and children live. And, the children get to have the freedom they want. To take care of her children, she has dedicated her life. “I fought against my parents to remain single,” she says and adds that she has also given up on going to weddings and funerals only to remain with the children.

Ms. Sujatha spends around Rs. 17,000 a month on her children, which her father Kallupatti Jothi, a location consultant for Kollywood, takes care of.

With Masters in Tamil and Hindi and a Bachelor’s in Sanskrit, Ms. Sujatha spends time at Rakshana, reading and living with her children.
