CPI calls for a national bandh
Special Correspondent
PATNA: The Communist Party of India has proposed that the call for a general strike on August 20 by trade unions and federations be widened into a national bandh to protest against the unprecedented price rise.
CPI General Secretary A.B. Bardhan made the proposal during an appeal by party secretary and AITUC general secretary Gurudas Das Gupta to like-minded political parties for a Bihar bandh coinciding with the labour strike across the country.
Mr. Bardhan said such appeals would be issued in all States separately. In Bihar the situation was worse, he alleged, as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had not kept his promises.
He said the left parties would meet leaders of other democratic parties and involve the public in the protest against the galloping inflation. Mr. Gupta said the notice of general strike would be served on the government on August 2 after staging a demonstration on July 15.
