This Day That Age
More than 50,000 police and troops stood ready to keep order in Paris on May 16 as Deputies gathered for a special session of the National Assembly at which M. Pierre Pflimlin, the Premier, is calling for emergency powers to cope with the Algerian crisis. M. Pflimlin told journalists that he would ask the Assembly to declare a state of emergency in all France, to meet the tense situation following an offer on May 15 by General Charles de Gaulle that he was “ready to assume the powers of the Republic.” Gen. de Gaulle, breaking a two-year silence, blamed the existing party system of Government for the split which has brought the nation close to civil war.
