Two naxalites killed in encounter

BERHAMPUR: Two naxalites were killed in an encounter with the police in Malkangiri district of south Orissa on Friday afternoon. In another incident the Maoist ultras shot dead a cricket player and contractor in Rayagada district on Thursday night branding him a police informer.

According to police sources, a patrol party of the Special Operation Group (SOG) during its combing operation encountered a naxal camp inside the jungles near Tenkalguda under the Motu police station in Malkangiri district.

Heavy exchange of fire continued between the police and the Maoists resulting in the death of two Maoists. An SOG jawan was injured.

Heavy amount of arms and ammunition used by naxalites were seized by the police. Taking advantage of the darkness, naxalites managed to escape.

With more SOG jawans, the Malkangiri Superintendent of Police, Satish Gajbhiye, rushed to the spot at a distance of around 100 km from the district headquarters, Malkangiri. Combing was intensified in the area to nab Maoists.

Meanwhile, on Thursday night Maoists shot dead 30-year-old Rajendra Sahu of Gothalpadar village under Gunupur block in Rayagada district. Rajendra was active construction contractor with links with the Congress party. He was avid cricket player and had represented Andhra Pradesh in national tournaments in 2006-07.

The greatest irony was that he was married just ten days ago.

It is alleged that Maoists shot him dead while he was taking a stroll near the pond at Gothalpadar village with a friend.

The naxalites alleged that he was a police informer.

He was in their hit list since long. He was the second person in his family to fall victim to bullets of Maoists. Naxalites has also branded his father Nrusingha Sahu a police informer and killed him on August 10, 2002.

On the next day the Maoists had targeted a police team on its way to Gothalpadar to investigate killing of Nrusingha. Seven policemen travelling in a van had been killed in a landmine blast near Gothalpadar village on August 11, 2002.
