Blue print on research activities prepared Efforts on to attract students from far and wide BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to restore the lost glory of prestigious Utkal University, newly-appointed Vice Chancellor Mr.Binayak Rath has taken up a few timely initiatives recently. The Vice-Chancellor, who participated in the review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary at the State Secretariat here on Thursday, told the media that the thrust has been on filling of a large number of vacancies in academic and administrative wings of the university. While the University had 340 faculty members in 1990, it has reduced to 166 this year and following retirements it would come down to 142 by 2010, the meeting revealed. Meanwhile, the Government has resolved to abolish 73 posts that is being opposed by the Syndicate, it was learnt. The university authorities have requested the Government to review the decision, stated Mr.Rath. Having full fledged faculty was a must for imparting quality education and undertaking research activities, he said. The Vice-Chancellor has constituted an advisory council comprising senior faculty members that would meet once every month to chalk out different developmental activities for the University. “Maintaining a congenial campus life is a very important aspect of any educational institution of its kind,” Mr. Rath said and added that he would also ensure that research activities taken a quantum leap forward during his tenure. A blue print of the research activities to be taken up by different departments during a year has been drafted, he stated. Efforts would be made to make the public aware of the achievements made by the university to attract students from far and wide, he said. Meanwhile Chief Secretary A.K.Tripathy told the media that university authorities would be asked to justify the requirement of posts and accordingly steps would be taken for appointment of faculty members.
