Naveen hopeful of good show in polls

BJD-BJP Government completes four years

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday expressed hope that the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance headed by him will do well in the coming elections in the State.

Mr. Patnaik, who completed four years of his second consecutive term as Chief Minister on the day, said his government had done a great deal of work with regard to agriculture, education and industry during the past four years.

The State had attracted huge investment during the past four years, which was more than what it had attracted in the past 60 years.

Mr. Patnaik became the Chief Minister in March 2000 when the BJD-BJP alliance was voted to power in the State for the first time. He had preferred to hold Assembly elections one year in advance along with the 2004 Lok Sabha polls and the alliance headed by him was elected for the second term.

The ruling coalition’s completion of four years in office in the second term, however, was a usual day for Mr. Patnaik. There was no formal celebration to mark the occasion.

Major decision

Mr. Patnaik, however, took a major decision during the day. He held a high level meeting where it was decided that the 10 lakh families, which were to be excluded from the list of below poverty line families as per the Central Government’s decision, would be given the benefits that were being received by the remaining BPL families by the State Government.

The BPL families, which would be excluded from the 1997 BPL list, would be included in the State government’s BPL list and given the benefits under the schemes such as `Mo Kudia’, Madhubabu Pension Yojana’, and BPL rice supply programme, the meeting decided.
