KARUR: All textiles related activity in Karur came to a standstill on Friday in response to a State-wide strike call given by the Tamil Nadu Textile Forum to highlight their charter of demands including measures to rein in the skyrocketing yarn price. Traders also resorted to a protest fast here to press their demands. Karur Textile Forum spearheaded the shut down here and all the allied associations across the industry responded to the call. It is estimated that several crore worth trading was given the go by on Friday as traders wanted their grievances to be heard by the governments. Textile related activities such as dyeing, bleaching, tailoring, weaving, knitting and other allied activities were stopped as the firms remained shut all through the day. The stakeholders also staged a protest fast near the Taluk Office here to press their charter of demands which included among other things allowing export of cotton yarn after taking care of domestic needs, clamping a total ban on waste cotton that is being widely used for home textile linen, governmental efforts to ensure that mills produce the stipulated quota of coarse cotton hank yarn as per the government order, prepare a comprehensive disposal plan for sludge generated at the effluent treatment plants and restructuring or waiving service tax on a slew of items related to the suffering textile trade. Resolutions were adopted at a meeting held after the fast. While one resolution called upon the Centre to take effective steps to ensure stability in yarn price by bringing all varieties of cotton under the Essential Commodities Act, and at the local level sanction special funds for the infrastructure development of Karur town. Lakshmanan, Weaving and Knitting Factory Owners’ Association president Puliampatti P. Ramasamy, Common Effluent Treatment Plan Federation secretary M.P. Ramasamy, Dyes and Chemical Dealers Association president I. Palanisamy and others from the textile industry’s various sectors participated in the protest fast.
