Easy route: Piling work in progress for the flyover from the new airport terminal to the NH by-pass in the city.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The work for the approach road to the three-storey terminal building of the Rs.245.58-crore world class terminal complex of Thiruvananthapuram international airport has commenced.

The approach road to the new terminal coming up on the Chaka side is from near Bharat Tyres on the Chaka-Enchakkal stretch of the Kazhakuttom-Inchivila NH 47 bypass. The work of the approach road is being executed by the State government.

The 170 metre-long and 30 metre-wide road will facilitate six-lane traffic to the complex. A seven-metre bridge above the high flood level of the Parvathy Puthanar would be constructed across the canal to connect the approach road.

Two ramps will be built inside the airport premises by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for ensuring the smooth flow of traffic to the car park in front of the terminal.

The work is being executed by a private construction firm based in Kochi and is being supervised by KITCO. The work got disrupted on Sunday when the labour unions demanded ‘nokkukooli’ from the firm when they commenced work of the test pile. However, the work resumed on Monday after the headload workers informed the District Labour Officer who arrived at the site that there was no dispute.

Airport sources said that another 15 acre of land on Karali side for the expansion of the car park and 0.8 acres on the Chaka side was needed for the first phase of the project.

The work on the Rs.165-crore first phase of the terminal complex includes Rs.115-crore terminal building, apron and a car park, which can accommodate 575 cars.

Work on the apron, two aerobridges, car park on the Parvathy Puthanar side and AC plant is going on simultaneously. The complex would have world-class facilities such as escalators (two) and elevators (five). The complex would have 18 check-in counters, 20 immigration counters, 11 customs counters, two security gates, two baggage claim belts, a bus lounge and a Rs.5-crore sewerage system.
