As many as 10,000 petitioners have approached the police commissionerate to complain against Quest Net, says L.Srikrishna
In the last 10 days, the number of people thronging the city police commissionerate in Egmore with complaints has increased significantly. Coming from far off places, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, and unmindful of the summer heat, as many as 10,000 petitioners have approached the commissionerate. And all of them complained that they have been allegedly cheated by a multi-level-marketing firm - Quest Net Enterprises India Private Limited. They said that the company, on payment of Rs 32,500, admitted each of them as members and in turn they were provided a kit containing a gold coin among others. The chain went on like this, it is alleged. The petitioners blamed the firm and its promoters of deceiving them and sought legal action. A 24-year-old youth in Sembium in his complaint said: “I just got a job in a software company. Some of my friends suggested investing in the MLM business. I joined. But, today I have lost hope after reading reports about the arrest of the MLM promoters. “Believing my neighbour’s words, I invested in Quest Net which promised high returns within a short period… I did [so] without the knowledge of my husband,” said a home maker from Anna Nagar who lost nearly Rs 1 lakh. “After successfully completing my diploma degree in computer education, I came to Chennai and invested my savings of nearly Rs 65,000…” Today, the promoters are cooling their heels behind bars and I have lost hope of getting my money back”. Some other petitioners said they were in no mood to leave the case at this point. They said that they wanted justice. Commissioner of Police G.Nanchil Kumaran said that public should first believe in dignity of labour. Making money through short cut methods would always land them in trouble and lead to mental agony. Noting that the police have promptly taken action as per the law against the accused in the case, he appealed to the people to think twice before investing their hard earned money. This is something like the frauds committed by some finance companies during the 1990s, in which thousands of people were cheated, he pointed out. Joint Commissioner of Police (North) M.Ravi said that lack of awareness appeared to be a main factor for so many people losing their money. The investigating officers have recorded confessions of some noted personalities including a sportsperson from Mumbai who had, through advertisements, lured public to join the MLM, he added. The Department of Income-Tax and the Customs authorities have been informed about the alleged irregularities in this case and it is hoped that it would be an eye-opener to public to discourage such businesses in future, police said. Though the MLM operator has informed the court through counsel that they would settle/compromise, the Madras High Court had observed that even in case of any settlement to the investors, for the offences, the police would have to investigate and produce the accused before the courts, which may sentence punishment as per the law, Mr Ravi said.
