The agency to execute the project will be finalised by June 15 Construction of the Rs.70 cr. project to be completed in 24 months HYDERABAD: HUDA received five bids for the 30-mld tertiary sewage treatment plant to be set up as part of the Hussain Sagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project. The bids were opened on Thursday and they would be short-listed based on technical evaluation. The tender-cum-technical committee will give its report by Monday to the Project Management Consultants who in turn will forward the report to the Japanese Bank for International Co-operation, which is funding the Rs.300 crore lake improvement project. After approval from the JBIC, the financial bids of the short-listed bidders would be opened for awarding the contract. It is expected that by June 15, the agency to execute the project would be finalised. The Rs.70 crore 30 mld STP will have a construction period of 24 months and the contractor would also take care of its operation and maintenance for three years. Meanwhile four bids were received for the 5 mld STP for Rangadhamuni cheruvu, close to Moosapet and adjacent to IDL factory, which falls under the catchment area of Hussain Sagar lake. The tenders for the Rs.10 crore 5 mld STP would be finalised by month-end and it would be completed in 18 months. Meanwhile HUDA Vice-Chairman K.S. Jawahar Reddy said that while these STPs would take time, immediate challenging task to reduce the stink generated by the Hussain Sagar lake would be to ensure the effective diversion of untreated sewage comprising domestic sewage and industrial effluents towards Amberpet STP and Musi. A meeting was convened last week with GHMC, Metro Water Works and Sewerage Board and APPCB to review the efficacy of diversion channels and functioning of Interception and Diversion (I&D) structures in the nalas, and problem of industrial effluents entering the lake. Meanwhile plans are also under consideration to enhance the capacity of five I&D structures so that entire 150 mld to 160 mld of sewage brought by the nalas in Hussain Sagar lake catchment area was diverted and only sewage treated by the existing 20 mld STP entered the lake. A proposal was also brought to HUDA to try the ‘Phyto remediation method’ popular in Israel on an experimental basis to tackle the stink generated by Hussain Sagar. But such a method would be effective in a still lake which would not get fresh untreated sewage. Once the diversion channels are improved , ‘Phyto remediation’ could be tried to tackle the stink, Mr.Reddy felt.
