MAN-MADE: A fire broke out on Friday in Venkatamangalam village, where eucalyptus trees have been raised as part of the Social Forestry Scheme by the Forest department.

TAMBARAM: Minor fires have been breaking out in the Reserve Forest at Nanmangalam and the social forestry area of the Forest Department at Venkatamangalam in the past week, but officials say there is nothing to panic as only shrubs and bushes are being destroyed.

On Friday, the residents of Venkatamangalam near Vandalur noticed a fire around 1.30 p.m.

It lasted 30 minutes and wiped out vegetation on the ground.

But, it did not threaten the eucalyptus trees raised by the Forest Department on the land belonging to the Revenue Department as part of a Social Forestry Scheme.

The flames leapt high, enough to come too close to the power lines above.

On Thursday last week, a fire broke out at the Nanmangalam Reserve Forest. Even before fire tenders from Tambaram rushed to the spot, the fire died down.

The fire had broken out on a dry patch of grass adjacent to Medavakkam Main Road and there was no threat to flora or fauna, the officials of the Forest Department said.

They said that even minor fires were manmade and that it was impossible for dry vegetation to burn, however scorching the summer heat may be.

Miscreants and trespassers light beedis and throw the matchsticks and stubs on dry bed of leaves and grass, causing the fire, they added.
