Colour code for fishing vessels
A.V. Ragunathan
CUDDALORE: The Coast Guard has prescribed area-specific colour code for deep-sea fishing vessels for the purpose of easy identification.
Only flourescent colours have been chosen for the purpose, according to V.Tamil Mani, Assistant Director of Fisheries (Marine), Cuddalore.
Three zones
Mr. Tamil Mani told The Hindu that the Coast Guard had divided the Tamil Nadu coast into three zones — north, central and south zones and allotted a colour to each zone.
These are: north zone comprising Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Villupuram and Cuddalore; central zone – Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram, and, south zone – Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.
The colour codes for the zones are: north zone — flourescent green; central zone – flourescent orange; and, south zone – flourescent yellow. Though the Coast Guard had earlier set a February 28 deadline for compliance, on the request of fishermen it has extended the time limit up to May-end.
As far as Cuddalore is concerned there are 606 large fishing vessels belonging to the following categories: Stern trawl boats (STB) – 200, Fibre-class reinforced plastic boats (FRP) – 200 and wooden boats with inboard engines – 206.
From the very colour of the vessels the Coast Guard can identify the origin and suitably advise the authorities in rescue operation or call back the truant boats.
