Anna Chakvetadze in action at Rome. HAMBURG: Defending champion Roger Federer and rising star Novak Djokovic are safely through to the semifinals of the Hamburg Masters Series after both enjoyed straight-set wins here on Friday. Australian Open winner Djokovic was always in control against Spain’s Albert Montanes as he sealed a 6-2, 6-3 win in 77 minutes. And, World No. 1 Federer beat Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3 in 80 minutes. Paes-Robredo pair in last four In doubles action, Leander Paes and his Spanish partner Tommy Robredo notched up a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Ivan Ljubicic and Robin Soderling to storm into the last four. The unseeded Indo-Spanish pair will next meet the second-seeded duo of Canadian Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia. Meanwhile in Rome, Russian sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze beat Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to go through to the semifinals of Rome International. Chakvetadze will next meet Alize Cornet after the French qualifier got a walkover from World No. 6 Serena Williams, who hurt her back while training. Jankovic beats VenusSerbian fourth seed, and defending champion, Jelena Jankovic dismantled Venus Williams’s power game 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
